Course Narrative
This course meets MLO 1 and 3 exposing us to an abundant amount of information starting from pre-Columbian era to Hispanics residing in the United States. Through the book, Su civilización y su Cultura, I learned how its twenty countries were formed, and affected, due to politics, economic and social reasons. According to the book, at least 90% of the population speak Spanish (Castellano). It was very interesting to learn about the various pre-Columbian civilizations like the Olmec, the Maya, the Inca and the Quiche and about their culture and the pyramids. We continued with the fifteenth century explorations and Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America (actually landed in the Bahamas).
Next we discussed wars of independence in Spanish America, the conquest of Mexico with the arrival of Hernán Cortés. We were surprised that other places were conquered as well like Quito, Chile and Venezuela. I did not realize how long the United States has been involved in Latin America’s history either intervening or enforcing some kind of control. Dr. Fernandez taught from minute one of the hour so we were busy the entire time learning and discussing. Moreover, we formed groups and did a presentation on the history and culture of a different country in Latin America. The book is somewhat small but full of detailed information and is one to have handy to locate information about the history of such a massive beautiful country.
